Mercedes reserve driver Nick Heidfeld is not likely to get any mileage at the three remaining pre-season tests in Spain.

Heidfeld will travel to all the grand prix this year as a possible substitute for race drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg. But with only 12 days of testing remaining, Mercedes competition director Norbert Haug said the team would not be able to offer Heidfeld much track time in the new MGP W01 car.

"It is envisaged that before the season start, Michael and Nico will get as many test miles as possible," Haug said. "In the unlikely event that he [Heidfeld] has to replace one of our regular drivers, Nick is well prepared to do a good job straight away."

Mercedes will resume testing on Wednesday this week in Jerez alongside nine of its competitors for the upcoming season. Team principal Ross Brawn has already made clear his intention to close the gap to Valencia pacesetters Ferrari by bringing a number of modifications to the car.
