Mark Webber admitted that he was happy to deliver a strong qualifying performance in tough conditions ahead of taking a grid penalty for the German Grand Prix.

In the wet session Webber qualified in third place, but will start eighth after being penalised for an overnight gearbox change. With Romain Grosjean and Nico Rosberg suffering the same fate but qualifying in 15th and 17th places respectively, Webber said it would have been easy to compound his penalty with a poor qualifying performance.

"It was tricky for all of us," Webber said. "Obviously dodgy conditions, especially when it got wet. Obviously I did a better job than the other guys who had the five-place penalty; it was easy for all of us not to get it right today. So I'm very happy to be quite a long way up, we could have done a bit better here and there but we did our best out there at that point. We could have maybe [pitted] - Fernando stopped - ifs, buts, shoulda, woulda, coulda doesn't count. We're third - eighth now with the penalty for the gearbox - and looking to come forward tomorrow."

Webber added that he expects to be able to make progress from eighth place, with the RB8 looking competitive on the dry, intermediate and wet tyres.

"We aim to go forward, for sure. We've shown that the car is strong in all conditions and we're going to look to come through. But we have many, many quick cars out there as well. It's never ideal to put ourselves on the back foot by shooting ourselves in the foot with some penalties here and there. But it's a long season, it's a marathon and we'll keep boxing; looking forward to the grand prix tomorrow."
