Ferrari technical director Pat Fry will miss the Spanish Grand Prix after being taken to hospital suffering from appendicitis.

Fry was admitted to hospital on Saturday after seeing the Ferrari team doctor complaining of pain in his abdomen. While it was initially thought to be kidney stones, Fry was later diagnosed with appendicitis and was due to have surgery on Saturday afternoon to have his appendix removed.

Team principal Stefano Domenicali said after the conclusion of qualifying that the team hoped to see Fry back soon.

"I want to wish the best of luck to Pat Fry, our Technical Director who will be undergoing an appendectomy this afternoon and we wish him all the best for a rapid recovery."

It is not yet known how long Fry will be absent for, with the next race - the Monaco Grand Prix - taking place on May 26.
