August 8, 1982: A season already under a pall following the deaths of Gilles Villeneuve and Ricardo Paletti became even grimmer when championship leader Didier Pironi crashed his Ferrari heavily in practice at Hockenheim and broke both his legs. Team-mate Patrick Tambay won the grand prix the following day but it was little consolation for the devastated Ferrari team

July 25, 1982: Rene Arnoux recorded his first win in more than two years at the French Grand Prix, defying team orders to lead home Renault team-mate Alain Prost

July 18, 1982: Niki Lauda showed that the three-litre engines could still outperform turbocharged ones with victory in the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, leading home Didier Pironi by almost half a minute

July 3, 1982: Didier Pironi won the Dutch Grand Prix from Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg shortly after walking away unscathed from a massive testing accident at Paul Ricard, his car somersaulting before landing back on its wheels

June 13, 1982: Nelson Piquet won the Canadian Grand Prix, but it was another race marred by tragedy, this time witnessed by millions of viewers across the world as Ricardo Paletti was killed in a collision at the start of the race

June 6, 1982: John Watson in a McLaren won the inaugural Detroit Grand Prix, his second victory of the season putting him top of the drivers' championship. His win also set a record for a street circuit as he started the race way back in 17th place on the grid

May 23, 1982: Riccardo Patrese won a Monaco Grand Prix which appeared to be a run-of-the-mill affair until light rain, spilt oil, and a lack of fuel late on turned the race on its head
