Bottas ends Young Driver Test on top
Valtteri Bottas topped the timesheets on the second day of the Silverstone Young Driver Test.
The Williams test driver followed his fastest time on day one with the quickest time again, this time on the International Circuit; effectively the bottom half of the Grand Prix circuit with the track going straight on after Village and turning right on to the Hangar Straight.
Bottas' best time was a 48.963s as he completed 170 laps of the 3.057km circuit, and he said he was pleased with a "trouble-free" day.
"It was another successful day today for the team, with a trouble-free performance and no problems with the car," he said. "It was useful to get some longer runs in again today and it was good for me to get a better understanding of the tyres, and how the team works. We were lucky with the weather today considering the forecast, as we were able to do most of the runs in the dry, despite a bit of dampness early on."
Marussia was the only other team running, and Max Chilton was second quickest with a 49.932s. Chilton set his time in the afternoon before a rain shower, and again shared the running with Rio Haryanto. Haryanto's best time was a 50.405s, and team principal John Booth praised both drivers' performance.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed spending the past two days here at Silverstone keeping a close eye on our two young drivers and I have been very impressed with what I have seen of Max and Rio," Booth said. "Both drivers completed over 350km over the two days, the majority of which was in the dry, and they have done an outstanding job given their relative lack of experience. Their running has also helped us to answer some of the set-up questions which were carried over from the British Grand Prix weekend, so it has been a very valuable experience all round. I have been particularly pleased with the way Max and Rio approached this opportunity and coped well with the environment of the car and the team. They earned this chance and they have made the very best of it."
HRT decided not to run on the second day of the test having managed to complete its planned schedule with Ma Qing Hua on the first day.
