Fernando Alonso has been named as the highest-earning Formula One driver in the latest Forbes Magazine rich list.

Alonso's salary was reported to be around the €30 million ($38m) mark according to Business Book GP 2012 earlier this month, but Ferrari moved to deny the figures. Now, however, Forbes has listed Alonso as the 19th highest paid athlete in the world with earnings of $32m between June 2011 and June 2012 - of which $3m comes from endorsements.

Michael Schumacher comes in just behind Alonso in 20th position overall with a total of $30m - though his actual salary is listed at $20m with endorsements making up the rest. Lewis Hamilton ranks 24th overall with a total of $28m of which $5m is due to endorsements.

No other current drivers made it in to the rest of the top 100 highest paid athletes.
