Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has said his team will not stop Michael Schumacher from making a comeback in Formula One.
Schumacher is currently contracted in a consultancy role with Ferrari but di Montezemolo has said he cannot keep him from joining another team. The news comes on the back of a weekend of fevered speculation in the German press that Schumacher is on the verge of signing a deal to drive with Mercedes in 2010. Reports in Bild on Monday suggested only the results of a medical test now stand between Schumacher and a comeback.
When asked by Reuters if the seven-time world champion could be prevented from racing elsewhere by his Ferrari contract, di Montezemolo said: "No, [it's] not binding."
"It's clear that if he decides to take another road our agreement will no longer be valid, that is logical," added the Ferrari boss. "You can't work with a competitor and with us at the same time. I still haven't spoken to him about it. He is only a dear friend, not a team member. He is a consultant for our road cars."
Schumacher hoped to make a return with Ferrari last season when Felipe Massa was ruled out of the final seven races with a fractured skull. His comeback was cut short, however, when a neck injury, sustained racing motorbikes, meant he was not fit to race. Since then his manager Willi Weber has gone on the record saying Schumacher is now fit and healthy.
