Profile
Fate struck a cruel blow when it claimed the life of this talented Frenchman at the 1973 US Grand Prix, for he was poised to assume Jackie Stewart's role as Tyrrell team leader and thus make a bid to become the first French World Champion. French Formula Three champion in 1968, François was promoted by Tecno to its Formula Two squad and finished third overall in 1969. Tyrrell snapped him up for 1970 and put him under the tutelage of Stewart. François was twice second in 1971 before winning the final race of the season, at Watkins Glen, the track that would later claim his life. This helped him to third overall behind Stewart and Ferrari's Jacky Ickx. The 1972 season was not such a success, with two more second places, yet François made up for this by finishing second in the Le Mans 24 Hours. In 1973 he was second six times, three times behind Stewart. Then came that fateful day in upper New York State...
