Profile

Hugely successful as a motorcycle racer, Jean-Pierre first raced a car in 1963, and indeed his early sports car races nearly cost him movement in one of his arms after a crash at Reims in 1964. However, he fought back to win the French Formula Three title in 1965 for Matra, and embellished this with victory in the Monaco Formula Three race in 1966, and several months later made his grand prix debut, winning the Formula Two class in the German Grand Prix. It was not until 1968 that he was given his first run in a grand prix in a Formula One car, still with Matra. This produced fifth place, however, and he was allowed to continue, soon exceeding this result with second at the Dutch Grand Prix. His progress continued into 1969 and a further second place helped him to fifth overall in the championship. He stayed on with Matra for 1970 and 1971, but things turned sour when he was threatened with the suspension of his license following the death of Ignazio Giunti after an incident involving Jean-Pierre in a sports car race in Argentina. Then, in 1972, it all came right - at Monaco at least, when he won in torrential conditions for BRM. That was his only ever win, however, and he faded from Formula One after two further seasons with BRM.
