Willy was famous for his lurid accidents. Ferrari signed him in 1960, and he was in and out of Formula One until he was signed up as number two to John Surtees in 1963. He ended his grand prix career after crashing out of the German Grand Prix. He raced in sports cars until 1968, when he crashed in a Ford GT40 at Le Mans after a door flew open, and he suffered head injuries. He was ill for a year and, realizing there was no place for him in racing, killed himself.
