Ivor Bueb was an established driver for the Cooper works team by the time he drove the first of his five grand prix in 1957, the same year he was runner-up in the 500cc British Championship. His first GP finish came in his fourth race, 11th at the Nürburgring in 1958. He also managed 13th in his final race, the 1959 British GP. In 1955 he won Le Mans in a Jaguar D-type with Mike Hawthorn, a success he repeated with Ron Flockhart two years later. His victory with Hawthorn was remarkable in that he had never driven such a powerful car before, he took over control immediately after a crash in front of the pits which killed 83 people. He died in a Formula Two race in France in 1959 when his car ploughed into banking on a mountain circuit.
