Leslie Thorne was a reasonable hillclimb racer before World War Two whose one Formula One championship outing came at the 1954 British Grand Prix where he finished a distant 14th. On the strength of some good showings the previous year in a Formula 3 Cooper-Norton he had been persuaded by David Murray, the owner of Ecurie Ecosse and a friend of his, to try the team's Connaught, which he did in several non-championship races as well as at Silverstone.
