Bill Aston took part in three F1 Grand Prix in 1952 and 1953 when the rules were such that it was a Formula 2 competition. He drove his own car, the Aston Butterworth, built in partnership with Archie Butterworth. While the car was decent enough, it lacked reliability, in the 1952 German GP it broke down on the second lap. Funding was always an issue, and when new F1 regulations were brought in for the 1954 season, the team wound up. Away from F1 Aston was a test pilot and started his racing career on bikes before graduating to F2. In 1951 he set a 500cc world speed record in a streamlined Cooper.
