A former engineer, John James' only Formula One start came at the 1951 British Grand Prix but his Maserati suffered a damaged radiator and he was forced out after 23 laps. Later that year he managed an eighth place in both the Woodcote Cup and the Daily Graphic Trophy races at Goodwood. A change in regulations in 1952 limited the use of his privately-owned Maserati to Formula Libre events, so he participated in a couple of sprint races. He retired from racing in 1953.
