Profile
Carl Scarborough started racing shortly before World War Two, and on resuming he was sidelined for almost two years after being injured in a car crash while a passenger. In 1946 he became the first man to win both National Midget and Big Car titles of the Central States Racing Association. At the 1951 Indianapolis 500 he briefly held the track record (135.614 mph) before he was forced to retire, and he returned in 1953 but in searing heat he became dehydrated and was forced to retire. Tragically, he later died at the circuit's in-field hospital, becoming the first person to die during an FIA world championship race.
