Pastor Maldonado is hoping he will be able to show off his true potential in 2012 after a difficult rookie year.

Maldonado joined Williams after winning the GP2 title in 2010, but the team struggled for pace and he scored just one point all year. He is staying with Williams in 2012 and has high hopes that he will be able to prove his critics wrong in a more competitive car.

"I trust the team because it is impossible to be worse than this year," Maldonado told Brazil's Totalrace. "I believe that was the worst position for a rookie, when nothing works, especially in the first year [as] you have to learn many things. Nevertheless, I defended myself well, even against Rubens [Barrichello]. It certainly was a year of learning."

Williams has overhauled its technical staff for 2012, with Mike Coughlan now leading the design of next year's car. Maldonado is confident the championship-winning team will bounce back.

"I'm sure we will improve we have worked really hard to grow as a team," he added. "I hope we have a better car, one that is more competitive so that we can always fight for points and higher positions."
