History
The event, held at the Hermann Tilke designed Istanbul Park circuit, normally throws up some drama as this technically difficult circuit follows the natural contours of the land. As a new venue the event also boasts some impressive spectator facilities. Unfortunately, however, it seems to be an event that doesn't appeal to spectators and the vast grandstands are often sparsely populated.
The most successful driver in the history of the event is Felipe Massa, who is the only multiple winner. He took his first pole, and subsequently his first win, at the 2006 event for Ferrari. He followed this up by taking back-to-back wins in 2007 and 2008.
The 2006 event attracted controversy that threatened Turkey's reputation in the sport. During the podium ceremony, the winner's trophy was presented by Mehmet Ali Talat - his caption appeared on TV announcing him as the president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus - a state that is only recognised by Turkey. The FIA launched an enquiry, believing it to be a breach of the organiser's neutrality. The decision on who would present the trophy had been left to the last moment, giving the FIA no opportunity to veto. The FIA issued the organisers with a $5million fine.
Event organisers were again under attack in 2008, when during the GP2 support race, a stray dog made its way onto the track. Although Giorgio Pantano avoided the animal, Bruno Senna was not so lucky. The impact killed the dog and did terminal damage to Senna's front suspension.
