Jenson Button admitted that he is still struggling to understand the hard Pirelli compound despite setting the fastest time of practice in Barcelona.

The Spanish Grand Prix sees Pirelli supplying the hard and the soft tyres to the teams, and Button was quickest in FP2 on the soft option compound. When carrying out longer runs on the hard tyre, however, Button said he was unable to get it up to temperature and that it was a problem that would have to be solved by the race.

"It was a good afternoon but I think a tough afternoon trying to understand the tyres," Button said. "I still don't quite understand them. The car seems to be working pretty well on the softer of the two tyres but on the hard tyre I just can't get it working, I just can't get the temperature in to the tyre. I don't know why that is but something we need to sort out for tomorrow and for Sunday."

Button added that what really perplexed him was the inconsistent nature of the harder compound.

"On the option tyre I don't have an issue at all, I'm able to work the tyre. But on the prime tyre it's a bit on a knife's edge really. In the first run in P2 I had massive understeer, I came in we made a change and suddenly the car works and it was half a second quicker. Then at the end of the session I couldn't get the tyre working again. It's a tricky one; hopefully we'll solve it tomorrow."
