Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali says Fernando Alonso's only hope of winning this year's world championship is for Sebastian Vettel to hit problems in the remaining six races.

Alonso is now 60 points behind Vettel in the standings, and the Ferrari driver pointed out in Singapore that his car is a second slower per lap than the Red Bull. There were signs of weakness in the Red Bull when Mark Webber retired one lap from the end due to a water leak, but Domenicali said Ferrari needs Vettel to fall foul of some reliability issues to get Alonso back in the fight.

"The car for sure is not as fast as the Red Bull, at least not one of the Red Bulls," Domenicali told Sky Sports. "Congratulations to Sebastian because he won a great race but today on the last lap it was the wrong Red Bull that stopped on the track, no, just joking, seriously we congratulate him.

"The only thing we have to do is try to hang in there and see because maybe next time something will happen to Sebastian. Realistically speaking this is the only chance we have to win the championship. We have to be realistic and not stupid."

Technical director Pat Fry confirmed the team would not completely give up on the 2013 car just yet.

"For the final six races, one group of engineers will still concentrate on the F138, because we want to continue to try and improve so that we can be more competitive," he said.
