Mark Webber has conceded that Sebastian Vettel did a better job than him during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix and that his Red Bull team-mate deserved pole.

The two had looked closely matched in the build up to Q3 and Red Bull's rivals were easily a second down on their pace. Webber went first but a scrappy lap took the pressure off Vettel, who set by far the fastest lap of the weekend with a 1:18.773. Neither could beat it on their second attempt, Webber eventually finishing 0.4 seconds off the pace of his team-mate and forced to settle for second on the grid.

"I did my best, my first lap was probably not the cleanest attempt, but that's the way it goes," said a clearly disappointed Webber. "Seb deserves pole today, it was a good lap a 1:18.7. I'm sure there was some change left on the table for both of us, but in the end it came down to who got the lap and it wasn't my day today."

He compared the qualifying session to the one at the Spanish Grand Prix, where he took pole position and no other cars came close to matching Red Bull.

"It was pretty similar to Barcelona here," he said. "We knew that it was going to be between the both of us and there wasn't the chance for the other guys to have a crack at us today. It was going to be pretty tight between us like it was in Barcelona, so whoever did the quickest lap between us two was going to get pole."

He added that he was still confident of a good race tomorrow.

"I'm on the front row so it's a great position to start the race," Webber said. "The guys have done a phenomenal job all weekend so I'm looking forward to a good race tomorrow."
