Bernie Ecclestone has leapt to the defence of Michael Schumacher, suggesting anyone criticising him is "wrong".

Schumacher has been struggling for pace in the early races of the season and has been repeatedly out-performed by Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg. Mercedes chief Ross Brawn admitted after the German's 10th-place finish in the Chinese Grand Prix that the team had issues to address, but Ecclestone believes it would be a mistake to write off the seven-time world champion.

"Anybody who criticises Michael is wrong," Ecclestone told formulaone.com. "He deserves better. I would say don't underestimate Michael. Give him time to adapt to the new car and the new tyres. At the moment he's something of a newbie who has to get accustomed to the trade again.

"Michael would have never returned had he not been convinced that he can do the job. He is not a tourist in the paddock, he's here to win. And he will win again."
