Lewis Hamilton says he needs to get a win to get back on equal terms with Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, but has played down his chances of securing it at this weekend's British Grand Prix.

Hamilton leads Rosberg in the drivers' standings but when Mercedes had its best opportunity of winning - at the Monaco Grand Prix - it was Rosberg who came out on top. Hamilton is determined to win but admitted he will be up against it at his home race this weekend.

"I need to get a win," he was quoted by Press Association Sport. "But I'm not going to Silverstone thinking about the possibility of winning, not after witnessing the pace of Ferrari and Red Bull in Canada. They were massively quick.

"Sebastian [Vettel] was pulling away from me at a second per lap. We won't have gained a second coming into this race, but we can definitely beat the rest."

Mercedes' main issue has been tyre degradation which has seen strong qualifying positions turn into lowly finishes at some of its recent races.

"We've made a small step in progress, but I don't think we've cured it," Hamilton said. "Silverstone will be a real challenge for us, so fingers crossed it's not going to be a problem, but we'll have to see. Tyre degradation could be an issue. Long run [pace] is going to be a challenge because there are lots of high-speed corners."
