Since winning the British F3 National Class in 2006, Gonzalez's career has continued to progress despite a lack of standout results. A move to the F3 Euroseries saw him score just half a point in his one and only season before his Venezuelan funding moved him up to GP2.

Even in the feeder category Gonzalez struggled, scoring points on just three occasions across three years, but that didn't stop him securing a test for Caterham at Mugello in 2012 before driving for Force India at the Silverstone Young Driver Test later in the year.

After Luiz Razia's funding failed to come through for his Marussia drive, Jules Bianchi took over the race seat and Gonzalez was named as the teams' reserve driver for 2013.
