Rome insists it will not take Monza's place

Rome's mayor Gianni Alemanno has insisted the Rome Grand Prix will not take the place of Monza as the venue for the Italian Grand Prix.
In recent weeks Bernie Ecclestone has confirmed his desire to press ahead with a plan for a grand prix on the streets of Rome, with some reports suggesting a start date in 2013 and others in 2014. Milan's mayor Letizia Moratti responded to the news by saying she was worried Monza is set to lose its race at the famous Autodromo Nazionale, and Monza's mayor Marco Mariani told La Stampa: "It's the ultimate act of arrogance by a capital that for 2000 years has lived by removing the oxygen of others."
However, Rome's mayor Alemanno insists: "We will organise a grand prix in Rome, but we will make an agreement with Monza. The grand prix of Rome will be a grand prix of Europe. It will not replace the Italian Grand Prix."
The European Grand Prix currently takes place in Valencia, which has a contract to host the race through to 2014. There are 19 rounds on the calendar this year, with the possibility of an Indian Grand Prix in 2011 bumping the total up of 20 - a figure that is widely regarded to be the maximum.
