Vitaly Petrov played down the importance of out-qualifying Renault team-mate Robert Kubica for the first time this season.

The only driver left on the grid not to have out-qualified his team-mate going into the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, the Russian enjoyed his best Saturday outing to wind up seventh on the grid, a place above the highly-rated Kubica.

"When you drive around the track you are never thinking about beating your team-mate." Petrov told the BBC. "You just focus on your job, you just focus on your lap time. Of course it is better to be in front but anyway you always just focus on good results.

"We knew when we arrived here that our car would be quick here. We worked hard. We improved, we brought some new parts here. A good result and everything is cool I think. Despite his encouraging qualifying result, Petrov remained mindful of the perils awaiting drivers into the first corner.

"Tomorrow will be a very difficult start. The first corner is quite dangerous here. I hope it will be without accidents but I am starting with the good line [clean side] so we will have to do a good start and get in front of everybody in the first corner."
