Bruno Senna could race for Toro Rosso in 2010 if his Campos team fails to make the grid.
In the wake of claims that Campos is struggling to raise enough money to make its Formula One debut, some sections of the Brazilian and Italian media are reporting that he could make the switch.
Toro Rosso has only confirmed Sebastien Buemi for next year and has held back from officially announcing Jaime Alguersuari as its second driver. If the reports are true, Senna would be able to slot into the team for the season-opener in Bahrain.
However, news from Spain suggests that Campos is on the verge of securing its financial future by striking a deal with South African millionaire Tony Teixeira. The publication Diario AS believes an agreement will be made public today (Wednesday), adding that it could be worth as much as €4 million (US$5.8 million). On Tuesday team owner Adrian Campos insisted that his team would be on the grid and that he would remain as team principal.
"We will be at the first race," he told BBC Sport. "We are talking with people who would like to be shareholders. We expect to have more investors. People speak too much and make trouble for us. I don't want to sell my part of the team and I will remain the team principal - the condition to be a shareholder is to accept all the existing contracts. We are looking for investors and sponsors but the project is very much alive."
Campos is also understood to be in talks with pay drivers Vitaly Petrov and Pastor Maldonado over its remaining race seat. Formula 2 champion Andy Soucek also claims to be on board and said: "I am talking with Campos, and although at the moment it is complicated, I trust that it is an option."
