Felipe Massa believes that he can "be even faster" than Fernando Alonso given a competitive car this season.

Massa's contract runs out at the end of 2012 and Stefano Domenicali has already admitted that it will be a crucial year for him having failed to finish higher than fifth in 2011. Massa accrued less than half the amount of points that Alonso managed last season, but when asked if he felt he could challenge his team-mate, he said that given a more competitive car then he could come out on top.

"Yes, absolutely yes," Massa said at Ferrari's Wrooom media event. "I am convinced that I can do it. On the race tracks where there was not a marked degradation of tyres, the difference was shown mostly with my driving style. So returning to having a car, as the one we had for many years, having a car that is competitive, this difference does not exist.

"I am sure that I can fight against Fernando not just to have the same time, but to make a better time than him - so to be even faster than him."

Despite the pressure to improve, Massa has set himself high standards saying that his aim was not only to win races but to challenge for the championship having been runner-up to Lewis Hamilton in 2008.

"I am thinking about the championship, so of course you must have a competitive car from the start. If you have five or six races where you don't get the results you wanted, then it is difficult to recover. Talking about myself, the start of the season, the first part of the championship is surely going to be more important for my future as opposed to the second part. But that is not anything new."

Massa is the best because Alonso, Kimi, Lewis, Vettel and Button unable to match Massa's mouth as they never say it out like Massa did say I can beat who who who. Massa is No.1 in this field while Alonso and other champions not dare to talk like Massa as they only show they beat who on track and became the CHAMPION!!!

bit of arrogance from Massa. Alonso is far better driver than Massa. dont give excuses. i think he was lucky to get into ferrari. had seen him in sauber days. he did not have any outstanding result. just between 5-8 on many occassion on sauber. Alonso has won championship 2 times in renault. did very well in mclaren and almost won championship in ferrari. came from way back to almost take the championship. no idea why massa is being carried like passenger.

Felipe, Felipe..... You`re a nice guy, granted, but I don`t think you have it anymore. And you`re certainly not able to beat Alonso! A truly grat racedriver should be able to adapt to the tire situation. Quity frankly, this whineing is pathetic.

Thats hilarious....funniest thing I have heard all year...Massa you are dreaming....

Sure!... We believe you Felipinho... Good luck with that! :P

Beat Alonso? Really? I wasn't aware that Alonson was moving to HRT.

Massa sorry to say that this will be ur last yr with Ferrari cause u are not fast enough. Compare to yr 2005 and 2006 when Alonso got his champion, everybody knows that u are no match with Alonso. U are just too proud to ask Alonso how he manage to control his tyre better than u. Yes i do agreed is the driving style. U have follow or copy Shumi's driving style for too long. As u can see that Shumi is also Struggle with his tyre and this shows that ur two have to change the driving style. If ur two guys don't change the driving style, ur two can forget about Championship anymore.

Naturally Massa directs the blame to the car. Right from the start. It would be unheard of for him to believe it's his driving talent, or lack thereof, compared to Fernando.
