Kubica to test a Mercedes DTM car
- Robert Kubica
Robert Kubica will test a Mercedes DTM car this week in order to get a taste of how he would cope with a return to circuit racing in a car with downforce.
Kubica is set to take part in the European Rally Championship this year as his rehabilitation from his horrific rallying accident two years ago continues. He recently admitted that difficulties moving his arm are currently ruling out of a return to single-seater racing, but that should not be such a big issue in an DTM car.
During a teleconference with journalists, Mercedes' new executive director Toto Wolff said the test would give Kubica an opportunity to see what he can do but that an F1 test was still some way off.
"We all obviously like Robert, he's very special," Wolff was quoted by Autosport. "I think what we want to do at Mercedes-Benz is give him a chance of doing a proper test in a proper racing car, seeing how he goes and how he feels. He's not 100% fit yet. It's the first time he's in a car with downforce and I think we have to take it from there."
Wolff added: "I think we would all love to see Robert doing well in a Formula One car in the future, but it is definitely too early at this stage."
