Red Bull Ring put forward as potential 2013 venue
Red Bull has been made the FIA aware that the Red Bull Ring in Austria (formally the A1-Ring) has the potential to play host to a grand prix next year.
Next year's calendar has a space currently being held open for a "European" F1 race on July 21 after plans for a race in New Jersey were delayed. France was initially the favourite but a lack of funding has derailed talks, while Turkey's Istanbul Park is also under consideration.
However, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko told Speed Week that the renovated Red Bull Ring, which last hosted a race in 2003 under the A1-Ring name, has been put forward as a potential venue.
"We have made the FIA aware that there is we have a track with a full F1 license," Marko said.
He also told Speed Week that new hotels in the area would be sufficient to accommodate F1's travelling circus, while changes to facilities such as the media centre would be "no problem". He hinted that additional funding could come from the national government and the provincial government in Styria.
Renovations at the circuit were completed last year after Red Bull mogul Dietrich Mateschitz decided to rebuild the facility, which was demolished following the last F1 race on the A1-Ring in 2003. Since then the circuit has played host to the DTM championship and Formula 2, with Mateschitz never ruling out the return of F1.
The circuit is at the same location as the original Osterreichring that held F1 races in the 1970s and 1980s.
