Fernando Alonso says Ferrari needs to find improvements ahead of qualifying if it wants to compete with McLaren at the Italian Grand Prix this weekend.

Alonso was less than a tenth of a second off Lewis Hamilton in second practice despite losing time with an engine issue in the morning and a gearbox problem in the afternoon. But even though he looks close to the McLaren, Alonso said his team still needs to find a little bit extra to match McLaren.

"It was a bit of a strange Friday because of the mechanical failures, but sometimes we push to the limit," Alonso said. "We need to concentrate on the performance for tomorrow because McLaren looked very strong again today so we need to find something else for tomorrow. Then we see. I think it will be an interesting weekend and the weather should be stable for all three days so that will help to be very precise and maximise the performance of the car. Tomorrow will be a better test for us to measure really where we are in terms of performance."

He said he would have to rely on some of team-mate Felipe Massa's data going into final practice and qualifying.

"I think they were good sessions and it was incredibly important to have the work from Felipe," Alonso added. "When you have your session stopped for any reason you need to trust your team-mate and all the information from the other car so thanks to Felipe today we will not miss any of the laps that we were not able to do. We need to improve the car, as I said. We are more or less happy; we don't need to change the car black to white like we do at some Fridays we need to. It's just the small things we need to do for tomorrow and we look good in terms of performance that is for sure."

Alonso brushed off the mechanical failure and is confident Ferrari will ensure he has a problem-free weekend going forward.

"It's a reminder of how important it is to take care of every detail of the car because small problems stopped the car immediately. But this is good for Friday because it's a good lesson and sometimes when something happens on a Friday it will never happen again."
