Schumacher comeback driven by boredom - Stewart

Three-times world champion Sir Jackie Stewart has said Michael Schumacher's return to the sport came about because he "obviously got completely bored".

In an interview in the Metro, Stewart said: "[Schumacher] was a frustrated, retired-too-soon, former world champion. I mean, why in God's name would you go riding motorcycles and pretending to be the Stig on Top Gear? It doesn't make sense. He clearly missed the sport and his retirement was a mistake."

Stewart warned that Schumacher might not find the grid as straightforward as it was in the early years of the century when he dominated. "There was a void of highly-competitive drivers with highly-competitive cars, but it doesn't look like that's the case this year."

Looking ahead to the coming season, Stewart said it appeared more exciting than it had for many years. "I don't remember a better package of top drivers with top teams. All these names are capable of winning the world championship."

Asked to predict who would emerge from the pack, Stewart cannily sidestepped being drawn. "At this stage it's impossible," he said. "Nico Rosberg is the only driver among them yet to win a grand prix, but then he's lined up alongside Schumacher and Ross Brawn, who have worked together to land seven world championships."
