Michael Schumacher has been named ESPN.com's driver of the decade in a poll on the US-based site.
In a public vote, Schumacher, the seven-times world Formula One champion, edged out Jimmie Johnson, the only man to win four consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup championships. Moto GP legend Valentino Rossi was third with Sebastien Loeb, the winner of six consecutive World Rally championships, in fourth.
Readers were asked to rate five drivers - the final one being seven-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher - from one to five, with the No. 1 gaining five points down to the No. 5 getting one.
"Frankly, your votes were a bit surprising," wrote ESPN's Terry Blount. "Schumacher got the most points overall from 4,935 fans … but not the most first-place votes. Rossi easily garnered the most first-place votes among the readers - 1,863 top votes, compared to 1,270 for Schumi. Johnson was third overall and third in first-place votes with 1,160."
The public vote came about after a 13-man panel of experts were unable to split Schumacher and Johnson. They had six first-place votes for Johnson, five for Schumacher, one for Rossi and one for three-time Indy Racing League champion Sam Hornish Jr.
