Vettel 'not the best' - Briatore

Flavio Briatore says that Sebastian Vettel is not currently the best driver in Formula One, despite dominating the 2011 season.

Vettel secured back-to-back world championships with third place in Japan last weekend; his second worst result of the season having only failed to finish in the top two on one other occasion. Despite boasting a record of nine victories from 15 races, Briatore believes Vettel is third in line behind his own charge Fernando Alonso as well as Lewis Hamilton.

"Vettel is definitely good," Briatore is quoted by Corriere dello Sport. "But he has won because he has been the best to manage his phenomenal (Red Bull) machine. He is not the best. Imagine a race with everyone racing the same car; Vettel would be behind Fernando Alonso and also Lewis Hamilton."

Vettel has also taken 12 pole positions this season, and Briatore admits that he is the fastest man over one lap, while ranking Hamilton as quicker than Alonso.

"Over one lap I see him in pole position, with Hamilton second and Alonso third."

@ Pen gp, Mclaren had the fasted car in 2005 without reliability. Renault was second fastest with superb reliability, so Alonso had the BEST car to win that year.

This is a most correct assessment ...

Briatore is the guy who speaks from his heart and does not speak facts. No doubt he speaks highly of Alonso and he only wish he can speak something of Webber.

Fernando and Jenson are the best at managing their cars even if they may not be the fastest. They also nurse their tires well and make fewer mistakes than most drivers on the grid. Seb won this year not just on talent, but also on strategy that always left him on pole while the rest scrapped amongst themselves and split the points. Mark's dismal starts from the front row also helped him immensely. It would have been interesting to see Seb's performance from the 3rd row or the 4th row on the starting grid (both Fernando and Lewis have made some brilliant starts from 3rd / 4th rows only to find Seb streaming ahead...) This year also proves that there needs to be a clear no. 1 in the team to take both championships. Last year when Mark was competitive, the champion was only decided in the last race...

@ Alfredo Cedeno, Mclaren in 2005 was fast but not the best due to its unreliability woes which was why I say Alonso was fast to capitalise on that.

@ Christian Hartle Alonso didn't have have the best car in 2005, McLaren did. Renault did manage better finishing the races. In 2006, Ferrari was even with Renault. No Renault dominance either year, unlike RB this year.

If everyone had the same car, same tyres, same engine power and same car setup....... Michael Schumacher would once again dominate the sport, Alonso, Vettel, Rosberg, Hamilton and Button will follow. But lets be fair, the complete package besides driver also includes the team and car too and Redbull has delivered in all areas this year and therefore deserve the titles. From a driver perspective - I wouldn't say theres more than 1 seconds between all the drivers if they were driving the same car.....The difference comes from the power, aero and tyre management.

Pen gp, Alonso was fast enough to capitalise in 2005. It's down to which driver is good enough to make the most out of the car. Let's not forget Webber had the same equipment as Vettel, likewise with Fisichella and Alonso back in 05 and 06. Call me old fashioned but I always believed whoever wins the driver's championship is the best

Surprised to see "Mr. Briatore". He deserves no respect and obviously no ears.

Button would beat Vettel in the same car - no problem
