Pirelli test driver Pedro de la Rosa admitted on Thursday that the new Formula One tyres to be used next season are ahead of the development schedule and feel different to the Bridgestones currently used.

De la Rosa's latest assessment came after a two-day test session at the Circuit de Catalunya where he completed an extensive test on the medium and hard compounds.

"I've been very impressed because I have to say that the tyres were at an even higher level than I imagined," said de la Rosa. "If you look at what Pirelli has done, it's hard to believe that all this work has been carried out in such a short space of time.

"These Pirelli tyres have their own quite different characteristics to the current supplier that the drivers will appreciate next year and I'm confident that they will form a very competitive package."

The next test will take place at Paul Ricard early next month.
