American-based Cypher Group has confirmed it has submitted an official entry to become Formula One's 13th team in 2011.
As part of the bid it has tied up with Jonathan Summerton, an American Indy Lights driver with experience in Formula 3 and A1 GP. Some of the personnel involved in the project worked on the ill-fated US F1 bid, but the team is an entirely separate entity and has no links to US F1 bosses Ken Anderson or Peter Windsor. On its website it says its aim is to "simply give America the shot it deserves [in F1]".
"We have officially submitted our candidature and hope that we will shortly be selected by the FIA as the 13th entry in the 2011 FIA Formula One World Championship," read a statement. "We aspire to bring America's red, white, and blue back into Formula 1."
It added: "Jonathan is capable of racing against the top Formula 1 drivers and we hope to be able to give him a competitive car. We look forward to the opportunity of being on the starting grid in 2011."
Cypher Group is facing competition for the position from Epsilon Euskadi, Stefan GP and Durango, after ART GP revealed it would not be putting forward an entry earlier this week. The FIA is expected to announce the successful candidate in a few weeks' time.
