Sir Stirling Moss is recovering in hospital after falling three floors in a lift accident at his London home.
A malfunction caused his lift doors to open when the car was not at the correct level and the 80-year-old Moss fell three storeys down the lift shaft. He remained conscious throughout, but has broken both ankles, four bones in his feet and has chipped four of his vertebrae.
He was admitted to the Royal London Hospital before being moved to the Princess Grace Hospital with the assistance of ex-F1 doctor Professor Sid Watkins. He has since undergone a successful operation to have his ankles plated and pinned. It is hoped he will be moved out of intensive care later today and his life is not in danger.
His wife, Lady Moss, said: "this was a very unfortunate accident; it could have just as easily been another member of the family stepping into where the lift should have been". A full recovery is expected to take six weeks and the family said it would like to thank everyone, on behalf of Stirling, for their messages of support
Moss is widely regarded to be one of the greatest drivers of all time and won 16 grand prix during his Formula One career from 1951 to 1961.
