- Second Barcelona Test, Day Two
Mercedes looks consistently quick - Button
Jenson Button thinks Mercedes has looked "consistently quick" in testing so far but feels there is a lot more to come from his McLaren over the final two days of testing.
Wet and cold weather has made it more difficult than normal to read into the testing times this winter and Button stressed that he was not getting too distracted by the times. Nevertheless, he said the Mercedes, which is being driven by Nico Rosberg and his ex-team-mate Lewis Hamilton this year, has looked strong throughout.
"I'd say one team that has been consistently quick on their runs is the Mercedes more than anyone else," he said.
He added: "We'd be lying if we said we didn't look at times. That's what all the timing screens in the trucks are for, otherwise we'd turn them off wouldn't we? But to try and get an understanding of where people are is very difficult."
However, Button is expecting McLaren to make strong progress over the next two days if the good weather forecast holds true.
"It's a nice car to drive and there's nothing that scares me about the car, I just still feel we can do a lot more with it than we are at the moment," he said. "That's the exciting part I think. There's room for improvement and we're not at the end and we're not ready to go racing because we can still do more with it. There's also some very interesting things that we haven't tested with it yet that hopefully over the next two days will see improvements on the car.
"I think we should be sorted by Melbourne if we can have two good days. Obviously Sunday is the day I'm in the car but tomorrow is also important for set-up work. It's general stuff, it's stuff that we should have done a little bit earlier in testing but we just haven't had the chance because it took a bit longer than what we expected and also because the weather has been so tough. When you have such big graining because of the cold conditions, to do comparisons is very difficult. A set of tyres lasts you three laps."
