Andrew de Adamich was an accomplished saloon and sport-car racer who performed solidly in Formula One where he was one of the few drivers to have worn glasses during races. He won the 1966 European Touring Car Championship at the start of a long relationship with Alfa Romeo and made his F1 debut at the 1968 South African Grand Prix when his Ferrari spun off on oil. Later in the season he won a South American F2 tournament with Ferrari but was not retained by the team and he returned to Alfa Romeo as they returned to F1 supplying engines to a third works McLaren. De Adamich only finished once in 1970 in the McLaren-Alfa and had no more luck the following year when the Alfa engine deal switched to March. In 1972 he raced for Surtees as a pay driver and finished fourth at the Spanish GP, repeating that placing the following year at the Belgian GP in a sponsored Brabham. His F1 career ended that season after acrash at the British GP and he retired from racing the following year. He became a journalist and TV pundit in his native Italy and also vice-president of N.Technology which prepares race cars for Alfa Romeo.
