Profile
After proving wild in Formula Two, Johnny was given a Formula One break in 1968 when an accident to Jackie Stewart saw him drafted into Ken Tyrrell's Matra team at Monaco. He qualified an outstanding second fastest, and even led the race before hitting a barrier on the first lap.
Back again for Monza, he raced to second and was retained by Matra for 1969, and went on to win the Formula Two title. He signed as Stewart's team-mate for Tyrrell for 1970 but, after failing to qualify at Monaco, he retired, blaming an eye injury from a road accident for his loss of pace.
