After a brief fling with Formula One in 1964, the heir to the Revlon cosmetic fortunes returned to race in sports cars in the US until good performances in Indy Cars attracted the attention of the Formula One fraternity. He guested in a Tyrrell at the US Grand Prix in 1971 before signing up for Yardley McLaren. He soon proved to be a reliable points-scorer.
When the McLaren M23 came on stream in 1973, he took an excellent first victory in the British Grand Prix, grabbing the initiative in the wet early stages and heading an intense four-car battle towards the end. Another win followed in the confused and wet Canadian race. He left McLaren after he was offered only a third car in 1974 and switched to Shadow, but he was killed in testing for the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami when the front suspension failed and the car hit the barriers.
