Profile

Jo began his Formula One career in 1962, the year in a which he was also joint European Formula Junior champion, but despite picking up several top-six finishes, success eluded him until 1968. The reason for this change of fortune was that, in his fourth year with Rob Walker's team, the popular Swiss driver had front-line equipment at his disposal for the first time in the form of a Lotus 49.

Jo duly won the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch and was then offered a ride with Ferrari for 1970. However, Porsche, for whom he raced in sports cars, was determined to hang on to him and paid for a year in a works March. This proved a disaster as the team overextended itself in its first year in Formula One and he was delighted to join BRM alongside Pedro Rodriguez for 1971. After Rodriguez was killed mid-summer, Jo buoyed the team's spirits with a superb win in Austria, only to die in a non-championship race at Brands Hatch.
