While his working name wasn't a shadow on that he was christened with - Alfred Lazarus Fingleston - Les Leston began his career racing in a Jaguar SS100 before buying his own Cooper Mk V and then from 1952 a Leston Special in which he won 16 races.
In 1954 he was signed as a Cooper works driver and that year he won the Formula 3 championship. He continued to drive in a variety of formula, with his two Formula One World Championship races coming in 1956 and 1957. He failed to finish either, and did not qualify in a third. He won the British saloon car championship in 1958 and the British GT series in 1961.
While racing he built up a very successful motor accessory company but in the early 1970s he moved to Hong Kong where he worked as a broadcaster before returning to England in the 1980s.
