Immediately after World War Two, Paul Emery took over Emeryson Ltd from his father, George, who had been building racing specials since the 1930s. He built and raced his own front-wheel-drive 500cc Formula Three cars, competing in one championship grand prix in 1956 where ignition failure forced him to withdraw. Emery had entered the 1950 British Grand Prix, the first of the new era, but his car was rendered unfit before qualifying even started. "It caught alight on the grid and we thought we had the situation under control until a marshal popped up, whipped off the bonnet and exacerbated the whole situation," a team-mate recalled. "The methanol went up and we were out of the race."
