A garage owner from Bristol, Horace Gould competed as a privateer in 14 grand prix, but his only points came when he managed fifth at Silverstone in 1956 driving a Maserati. His participation was a hand-to-mouth affair, he often had to scrounge parts from the Maserati team to keep his car on the road. He was a regular in non-Championship races where the prize money was enough to keep his head above water. Once Maserati withdrew from F1, Gould could no longer afford to compete, although he was lured back one last time for the 1960 Italian GP when a boycott left the field open. Sadly, crossed fuel lines meant his old Maserati failed to start.
