An accomplished sports car driver and the winner of the Carrera Panamericana in 1954, Umberto only drove occasionally in grands prix as a junior driver for Ferrari in the mid-1950s, followed by three races for Maserati in 1956. Leg injuries interrupted his career, but he won the 1959 Sebring 12 Hours, and repeated this feat again in 1964. He won the 1968 Targa Florio driving a Porsche, and was victorious on the Sicilian road circuit in 1953 and 1956.
