A Billingsgate fish merchant, John Barber took part in one grand prix, finishing eighth in a works Cooper at the 1953 Argentina race. In 1952 he had raced a Cooper-Bristol Mk1 but suffered a serious crash in the final race of the year at Castle Coombe. After his outing in Buenos Aires, he returned home and was involved in another accident, he was blameless, but it killed a fellow driver. He was distraught afterwards, convinced he was responsible, and sold his car at the end of the season. He continued racing, however, and eventually retired to the Mediterranean.
