Profile

Marcel Balsa, who started on motorbikes, only emerged on the racing scene after World War Two, by which time he was in his mid 40s. After buying a Bugatti Type 51 he did reasonably well in French events, and then switched to a self-built BMW-engined Formula Two special and a Jicey-BMW. In 1949 he finished fourth in the Luxembourg Grand Prix and in 1952 he entered his only Formula One championship race, the German Grand Prix, retiring after six laps. He all but disappeared from racing thereafter.
