Manny Ayulo was an American driver - and skilled mechanic - whose four F1 appearances were all in the Indianapolis 500, between 1951 and 1954, when that race formed part of the championship season. His best finish was in 1951 when he was third in a shared drive with Jack McGrath. He died in a crash when his car drove straight into a concrete wall while preparing for the 1955 Indianapolis 500. Six months before his friend, and team-mate, McGrath was killed in the final race of the season. Ayulo, who was a champion roadster and midget racer, was found not to have been wearing a seat belt, and his pockets "were filled with wrenches".
