Profile
In 1952 22-year-old Troy Rutmann, driving a Kuzma-Offenhauser, entered the record books when he won the Indianapolis 500. He remained the youngest driver to win an FIA world championship race until Fernando Alonso in 2003, and remains the youngest winner of the Indy 500. He never repeated that success at Indianapolis - a fourth in 1954 his only other top-ten result - but did enjoy considerable success in sprint and stock car racing. His son, Troy Rutmann Jnr, was killed at the age of 18 in his first race when driving a converted Indianapolis roadster that his father had reportedly raced in his last start in the Indy 500 in 1964.
