Profile
Mauri Rose was a leading US driver either side of World War Two who won the prestigious Indy 500 three times (1941, 1947 and 1948). He began racing in 1927 and continued through to 1951 when he retired after his car rolled following a high-speed blowout. Unlike many contemporaries, he held down a full-time job while racing. He worked as an engineer with a number of firms, including General Motors, and helped Chevrolet establish its presence in both hod-rodding and stock-car racing. He also invented a device that made it possible for amputees to drive.
